Yawning:
A comparative-developmental perspective

I will review the
literature on yawning especially by nonhuman
primates, focusing on development, and contexts
of occurrence. Work on the extent to which
yawning can be voluntarily controlled will be
considered, along with implications for possible
social functions of the behaviour. There will
also be a review of studies on the
"contagiousness" of yawning in humans and
nonhuman primates, with discussion of the
outcomes in terms of the ontogeny and phylogency
of aspects of self-awareness. Finally,
consideration will be given to the role of
"empathy" in contagious yawning.
